about

‘Sáandlaanaay-The First Light’ is sung in the endangered Indigenous language of Haida.

SEATTLE, WA— This album came together in the midst of the 2020 World Pandemic. Producer/musician, Tim Kennedy and co-producer/Haida singer, Sondra Segundo are excited to get back in the studio (when social distancing requirements are lifted) and add the final vocal harmonies to tracks.

Although the album was not quite finished, the artist Sondra wanted to release it now, as a free gift to people during this difficult time of needed prayer songs.

The album cover art was inspired by Sondra’s Haida Family Crest - Double Fin Killer Whale (the artist wishes to remain anonymous).

Potlatch Fund (Seattle, WA) funded this entire language revitalization project. Ja Haw’aa!

The album cover art was inspired by my family crest (Double Fin Killer Whale). The artist wishes to remain anonymous. It came to him in a dream to gift this art to me, to use however I needed. I knew right away that I wanted to use it for this album cover.
Haw’aa my friend.

Always a big Ja haw’aa to all of our wonderful, hard working Haida elders & language teachers who've taught us all so much!

A special haw’aa/thanks to my producer, Tim Kennedy, a multi talented musician. He played the beautiful keys, strings and percussion in all of the old school gospel songs!

A special haw’aa to Potlatch Fund for awarding funding for this endangered Indigenous language preservation project!

I couldn’t have done this album without you!
